The Outsiders: Chapter 1

1. Describe each of the characters in this chapter and their relationship with one another.
Ponyboy: youngest, light-brown, almost-red hair & greenish-gray eyes.
Sodapop:16 going-on 17, drop-out.
Darrel (Darry): works too long, hard&firm, 6ft 2, and rarely grins.
Keith(Two-bit Mathews): oldest, wisecracker of the gang, 6ft tall, stocky build, and has rusty-coloured side-burns.
Steve Randle: 17, tall, lean, thick greasy hair, cocky, smart and a expert on cars.
Dallas Winston(Dally): elfish face, high cheekbones, pointed chin, small; sharp animal teeth and ears like a lynx.
Johnny Cade (Johnnycake): second youngest, shy, big black eyes, dark tanned face, hair is jet-black & shaggy bangs across his forehead.

Their relationship with eachother is that they all are "Greasers".

2. Who are the Socs? Who are the Greasers?
Socs: west-side, rich kids, beat up and make fun of "Greasers".
Greasers: east-side, like to make fights.

3. How do Ponyboy's relationships with Darry and Sodapop differ? Explain.
Ponyboy's relationships with Darry and Sodapop differ by Soda doesn't treat Ponyboy like a six year old unlike Darry and Sodapop doesn't yell at Ponyboy as much as Darry does.

4. Why is the 'gang' important to Johnny?
The "gang" is important to Johnny because Johnny got beat up pretty bad by Socs and if he isn't around the Greasers he will maybe get beat up again and because he had a bad homelife and they "gang" has been there for him.

5. How does Ponyboy react to what Sodapop tells him about Darry?
Ponyboy reacted to what Sodapop told him about Darry by not really believing what Sodapop told him and he was trying not to use sarcasm when he answered Sodapop.

6. Do you think Darry loves Ponyboy? Why does he treat Ponyboy the way he does?
I think Darry does love Ponyboy because Darry thinks Ponyboy is so smart & brainy. He treats Ponyboy the way he does because Ponyboy is like the "baby" of the gang.

7. What does Ponyboy mean on page 18 when he says, "I lie to myself all the time"? Do you ever lie to yourself? Why?

Ponyboy means when he says "I lie to myself all the time" by telling himself something that isn't true so then he won't think of the consequence of that action. I do lie to myself because I don't want to think of what might really happen i say my parents argue. I want to think of another ending to that.
